Description:	Virtual education is a fact. In recent years institutions of education have incorporated the use of elements involving virtual modality, and have increased their offerings for college, undergraduate and graduate online programs. University of Sonora has also participated in this modality, however, it lacks variety and one can tell it is still a developing project. Based on texts published by specialists in distance education (Silvia Enriquez, Lorenzo Garcia Aretio, among others), our paper will talk about what is e-learning and which are some of the requirements for it, emphasizing on literacy skills in order to increase the educational offer and guarantee, in a certain way, the implementation of virtual modality. The paper provides a brief overview of spaces dedicated to such teaching and finally focuses on the case of University of Sonora: the advantages and disadvantages of online education will be mentioned from the point of view of some pupils who have taken online classes in this institution. La educación virtual es un hecho, desde hace algunos años las instituciones han ido incorporando el uso de elementos que involucran lo virtual, así como han incrementado sus ofertas de bachillerato, licenciaturas y posgrados en línea. La Universidad de Sonora también ha participado en esta modalidad, no obstante adolece de variedad y se puede decir que es un proyecto incipiente. Con base en textos publicados por especialistas en educación a distancia (Silvia Enríquez, Lorenzo García Aretio, entre otros), en este texto se hablará acerca de qué es la educación virtual y cuáles son algunos de los requerimientos de ésta, haciendo énfasis en las habilidades de lectoescritura para aumentar la oferta o garantizar, de cierta forma, la implementación de la modalidad virtual; se hará una breve reseña de espacios dedicados a dicha enseñanza para finalmente centrarse en el caso de la Universidad de Sonora: se mencionarán las ventajas y desventajas de la educación en línea desde el punto de vista de algunos alumnos que han cursado materias en línea en la Universidad de Sonora.
